War of the Spark Ravnica Magic The Gathering eBook Greg Weisman Reviews

  • At first a lot of fans of Magic The Gathering’s story were miffed that the main beats of War of the Spark were revealed from the card set’s preview season before any of the literature was released itself. Dack Fayden got his spark ripped out? Wait, Niv-Mizzet died in the first place? Gideon sacrificed himself to save Liliana, the only one who can turn the tide (a la The Last Hope during Eldritch Moon)?

However, now I’m glad I was able to see the framework built by Wizard’s in-house design and creative teams before I read Wiesman’s take. I avoided leaks and discussions of the novel because I wanted to be surprised and mystified by twists and unforeseen happenings. However, I needn’t have bothered, as the book offered… none of these.

The story was, simply, conveyed better between the set trailers, art, and flavor-text. War of the Spark’s premise is rife with stakes and emotion, and the animation and cards wonderfully illustrated Nicol Bolas’s cruel mechanizations, the darkness and destruction befalling local Ravnica, Liliana’s inner conflict and decisive resolve, Gideon’s emotional sacrifice and well deserved rest, and many more struggles, plans, and tragedies. Even Ral and Tomik’s relationship got an endearing nod with Dawn Murin’s art direction via the inclusion of wrist cloths in their card arts.

The frame and setup of the story was all there, and it was solid. While fans were waiting for the novel’s release, we were welcome to fill in the narrative gaps with our speculation and imaginations.

Regardless, Wiesman’s own imagination didn’t do anything particularly good or interesting with what it was given. He covered all the key events and all of the characters, but that’s pretty much it. Cleverness, surprises, emotional tracking, the book had none of these. Things that should have been grandiose and exciting fell flat. The Gatewatch, which by all means should have been ready with a crafted plan a la the endings of the Ixalan and Dominaria blocks, ran around with their heads cut off for over half the book.

There was no good reason for Jace and Vraska’s plan to not come to fruition, and no reason why the rest of the Gatewatch to be caught so unaware. This was the finale, and most characters were set back character-development wise for it, when they should have been forged and triumphant from their previous successes and failures. The book suffered from character overload, and it wasted time covering relatively inconsequential moments of low-stakes battles with the Eternals (who seemed to also be powered-down from how we knew them).

Teyo and Rat were meant to act as a lens for readers new to MTG story, but I don’t think this intention was achieved. The sheer amount of names and locations were probably inconceivable to follow from someone not familiar with MTG’s dense lore.

I much prefer the looser canon of War of the Spark’s set art and trailers over Wiesman’s novelization of it. I have to wonder if leaving the novel to some of the writers of the web fiction such as Alison Luhrs, Kate Elliot, Doug Beyer, Nicky Drayden, etcetera, would have resulted in a War of the Spark novel with a little more passion and heart.
  • If you're a big enough Magic fan to ignore the sloppy writing and weird characterizations, this book is fine. If not, stay far away from this mess.
  • Let me get this out in front do not make this your first entry into Magic's lore. On their website there is a "story" section that contains a lot of free reading, which is really necessary because without it this book loses a lot of its oomph. If you just want to read enough to catch up with what's going on in this book, I recommend reading the following story blocks on the website

Battle for Zendikar/Oath of the Gatewatch (details the formation of the Gatewatch, the main heroes of the novel)
Shadows of Innistrad/Eldritch Moon (not super necessary for the novel but bridges the Gatewatch story and brings another main character into fold)
Kaladesh/Aether Revolt, Amonkhet/Hour of Devastation, Ixalan/Rivals of Ixalan, and Dominaria (more Gatewatch adventures and starts directly laying the groundwork for the novel)

There's other lore interspersed there that is interesting and will add some context to the novel but is not strictly necessary. But without this primer, you're going to be underwhelmed when characters like Ugin or Nissa show up on the page without introduction and start doing their thing.

As for the novel itself, as a Magic fan I found it to be an enjoyable read. Nicol Bolas has been laying the groundwork for his master plan over the past several years of story and it's really neat to finally see all the pieces interlock. There is a satisfying conclusion to this particular story arc (if you're up to date on the lore anyway, otherwise it feels out of left field), and you see a couple seeds planted for where the story can go from here. Don't expect The Next Great Novel, but if you've been enjoying the lore posted on the website, you'll enjoy War of the Spark because it's written in the same style.

A lot of characters get name-dropped to the point where you're keenly aware they're being named-dropped and, perhaps more infuriatingly, the Sorin/Nahiri feud, one of the great conflicts in the current lore, is explicitly pointed out and then is promptly forgotten about. We're introduced to several new characters, some of whom are only in a couple paragraphs (like The Wanderer) and some who are central characters in the story (Teyo).

The novel also glosses over a huge lore point between Jace and Vraska that had been built up as a key to the Gatewatch's plans, only to have it hand-waved away here. I found that happening a little more than I would have liked in that it feels like there was a lot of threads were left basically unused. The core story is pretty good, but I can't help that if a few of those threads had been tugged a bit more it would have been excellent.

Overall, if you're an existing fan of Magic lore, this won't rock your world but it's a satisfying continuation to the story and the conclusion of an arc that's been set up over the past several years. But as the first novel to come out in quite some time, it doesn't make a good entry point.

Chasing a dream is never easy, but if you go far enough, it will set you free.

Captain Liz Clark spent her youth dreaming of traveling the world by sailboat and surfing remote waves. When she was 22, she met a mentor who helped turn her desire into reality. Embarking on an adventure that most only fantasize about, she set sail from Santa Barbara, California, as captain of her 40-foot sailboat, Swell, headed south in search of surf, self, and the wonder and learning that lies beyond the unbroken horizon.

In true stories overflowing with wild waves and constant challenges, at the whim of the weather, of relationships sweet and sour, of nature's marvels and colorful cultures, Liz captures her voyage in gripping detail in this memoir, sharing tales of sailing in high seas, of solitude and surprises, of finding connection to the earth and commitment to living in harmony with it. She witnesses how her dream leads her to understanding the unity of all things.

More than 10 years, 20,000 miles, countless adventures, and one cat later, she's still out there.

Ebook Swell A Sailing Surfer Voyage of Awakening Audible Audio Edition Liz Clark Random House Audio Books

"An incredible book which I recommend to anyone sailor or not -- this is an epic journey through life. I have not sailed in years but will always remember the myriad of experiences from board boats, a Lightning and other daysailers to a 28 ft centerboard sloop I sailed on the Chesapeake back in the 70s while stationed in Washington D.C. I identified with moments of stress when things go wrong and break -- squalls -- reef the main and the sheer delight of running before the wind with a spinnaker deployed. Solo sailing as Liz has done and others is a singular achievement in overcoming exhaustion. Don't know how she did it -- a tough and "give it all" person."

Swell A Sailing Surfer Voyage of Awakening Audible Audio Edition Liz Clark Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • I am a pastor and I am a sailor. I also have daughters not such older than Liz. I grew up in Florida surfing and after many years away, I have come home to minister to people here and I sail whenever I can on Escambia Bay. I read this book during a tough time in my life. Something about Liz's courage and perspective on life makes me smile. I read the excerpt from the book in Sailing Magazine and knew I needed to read the book. I have never written a review on . I am a staunch conservative--theologically and otherwise. But I must confess that Liz's description of ecological issues both irritated me and challenged me at the same time. I love the earth God made, and I cannot deny we have messed that up pretty bad. I am impressed with Liz's transparency and her ability to write honestly and transparently. I'm not concerned as some have expressed, that she does not know how to feel about God--good grief, that's 99% of the people I minister to--and I'm not sure how even I feel from day to day. But there is something about the journey that matters. Liz seems to write about what matters. And (as a writer of sermons for over 35 years) I have to say, I am quite impressed with her ability to transfer experience into words. If you are a sailor--or maybe not--but just someone who dreams of getting out of the rut and facing the unknown with a certain clumsy trust in something (or maybe yes, some ONE bigger than you) then this book may very well help you too. Thanks Liz, press on. You have helped me and I'm sure you will help others to find their way too.
  • This is an easy read and definitely a page turner. I could not put it down and flew through it.

I love reading about and watching YouTube videos of people who are living unconventional lives. It's interesting, intriguing, inspiring, and often fascinating. I also love stories of people who follow their dreams and when it takes them to places few have been before.

I've been following Liz's blog for a couple of years now and couldn't wait to read her book. It's an awesome and inspiring memoir about her adventures sailing and surfing around the world. It's also a deeply personal, raw, and emotional story about herself, her life, her relationships, and her spiritual journey. The book is about two journeys, her physical and travel journey on the open ocean sailing to so many beautiful and amazing places and her deep inner spiritual journey that she takes throughout this experience. They beautifully intertwine and go hand in hand. Reading this book is like getting to live vicariously through her and experience the journey second hand through her eyes. It also calls out the importance of climate change and how the oceans, animals, and people are being affected. She highlights the ever important fact that we need to work with nature, not against her.

If you've been following Liz on social media and reading her blog I'm sure you will definitely enjoy the book, or if you're a sailing and/or surfing enthusiast, or just a person who enjoys hearing about adventure and people following their dreams and staying true to themselves (like I do) you'll enjoy this a lot.
  • This is, by far, the best book to come out of “adventure” writing since Tania Abe’s book, “Maiden Voyage.” Although Liz Clark is a surfer, and there is some of that in this book, and a sailor, and there is some of that too, what it really is, is a journey book; Liz Clark’s inner journey as a human being. Many people write books about their sailing journeys. Very few write courageous, self revealing accounts of their fears, failures and successes wrapped up in a life adventure that is beyond most people’s imagination or even desires.

If you are a parent, get this book for your teenagers, male or female. It can act as a stimulus or a warning for young minds. It just may inspire them to think well beyond what you ever imagined. Other women have done similar exploits, but few have written so well about them. Share this with your friends. It is a marvelous, revealing and educational read of very high order.

As someone who has made two Pacific crossings, I can tell you that you can smell the salt air and the warm tropical breezes. But you will see it through intelligent and perceptive eyes. You will be exposed to hard truths about our world and where it is headed. Liz has what I consider a few answeres and a lot of thoughtful questions.

Don’t hesitate! You will likely love this book. And no, I do not know Liz Clark. Wish I did.
  • Man against man. Man against nature. Man against himself. Except this time he, is a she. Single handed sailing is not for the weekend skipper, especially when she's a thousand miles from everything, and her vessel is taking on water, and her foresail tears, and her berth is soaked, and her clothes smell like low tide, and lightning threatens her navigation and communication systems, and...it never ends. Swell is a story about resilience, determination, and the compassion of the human spirit. It's about discovery, personal and otherwise. It's about the generosity of strangers, the devotion of family and friends, decency, and the malicious nature of someone close. If you love sailing, ocean wellness, the South Pacific, dropping into a perfect reef break with no one out, read her story. It will change you.
  • Just finished this & thoroughly enjoyed it, spreads the message that people are generally good & kind & that the problems of polution need addressed now & not tomorrow

ZFast A Simple Proven Intermittent Fasting Method Audible Audio Edition John Zehren Matthew Posener Books Reviews

  • I am a 44 yo physician/M.D. who let himself go a little too much since I turned 41 and had my first son. My story is nearly identicle to the author’s in the sense that I am 5’10” tall and basically need to stay under 185 pounds to not look and feel overweight.
I have done some crash course fasting/starving myself in the past to lose weight fast when i needed to (e.g. about two months before my wedding and, inadvertently, during residency).
that was tough but my vanity got me through it.
after the wedding i got up to 205 pounds a couple years later. i like to have a cocktail or two just like the author and enjoy life. The bottom line is another M.D. buddy of mine told me about the Z-Fast method. i got the digital version of the book and tried it out. what i love about the book is that it lays out a fairly simple method of when to fast. a template for success if you will. The author makes it idiot-proof. lays out your cheat sheet for fasting.
Everybody is different but the bottom line is energy in versus energy out is what matters. you cannot deny the laws of thermodynamics. i’d much rather suck it up and eat very little a few days here and there and then allow myself on my “on days” to not worry about how much i consume. in the end my calories “in” are less than my calories “out” and keeping my physical activity constant (energy burned) i end up losing weight and easily keeping it off.
I also believe, and it is backed up biochemically speaking in the book, that periodic fasting is good for the body. it promotes glycolysis in the liver and essentially causes the body to enagage in both catabolic (breaking down) and anabolic (later building up) activity within your body. i liken it to “keeping the pipes clean” similar to starting and driving and old car every week rather than letting it sit and rust and all the tubes erode and eventually break down. if you haven’t tried it you should. it is a small amount of pain and sacrifice to not eat as much as usual on designated days in order to enjoy the finer culinary delights the rest of the week.
If you are not used to fasting, the first few times are difficult but you get used to it after that. my residency training was essentially an involuntary fasting primer so for me it was not a big deal.

Again, the bottom line is the Z-Fast works and really is not difficult to implement into your daily routine. you feel great, lose weight, and keep your body running smoothly internally. If you’re reading this review it must have peaked your interest. Give it a try. You will not be disappointed. Good Luck!
  • …busy executives and professionals who have had marginal success with diets, while experiencing that middle-age weight creep. Johnny Z’s book is an informative and entertaining read, as he takes us through his own struggles with weight gain and diets and shares his approach for how he maintains his weight by intermittent fasting.

He presents three intermittent fasting methods that he calls Z-Fast. Johnny Z gave me a peek at his manuscript a few months ago and I read it in one sitting. Since then, I’ve put his advice into action, creating a new fasting routine, now doing one weekly 36-hour fast, supplemented by one weekly 24-hour fast, a few days later. I skip 5 meals a week this way and it’s not hard at all. The weight is coming off, but what I like best is the energy boost!

If you want to be healthier, more energetic and vibrant, buy and read Johnny Z’s book and do the Z-Fast intermittent fast he describes. I wish I had this book 10 years ago! Two thumbs for Johnny Z’s Z-Fast!
  • I am a 56 yo physician and have known the author professionally for more than 10 years. I’ve been interested in fasting mostly for the health benefits although I did have a few pounds that I wanted to lose.

In our modern, “advanced” society food and calories are ubiquitous and constantly flooding our system. Not surprisingly this has led to a tidal wave of overweight and obese people so that it now has become the new normal. The CDC estimates that one-third of american adults have prediabetes, while another 10% of the population has diabetes, most of which is related to excess weight and poor diet.

In a light and conversational tone that belies the seriousness of the content, Mr. Zehren describes the Z Fast system for weight loss that is surprisingly simple and easy to follow. You can see his strong background as an effective business professional shining through as he lays out his method for long term weight loss. This book excels at providing, clear, practical, and actionable rules to make this something most people can do. Impressively, the author has used this system for more than eight years to lose weight and keep it off.

A key insight that I learned from this book is that we have been conditioned to respond to feelings of hunger by eating. You don’t need to do that and you can break the hand-to-mouth cycle. It is not difficult, and is good for your health.

If you are taking medication, or suffer from an eating disorder, you probably should check with your physician before starting this program to get a green light. It is also a good opportunity to get baseline blood tests, so you can document any change in your blood chemistries as well as your weight.

    What this book is
A concise and practical guide to lose weight quickly and successfully.
An introduction to some of the health and metabolic benefits from fasting.
    What this book is not
An in-depth dive into the metabolism of fasting. It is not meant to be a textbook, but a practical guide
A guide to what you should eat. While most people will reap further benefits by paying attention to diet quality on their non-fasting days, it is not required for the Z-fast to be successful. In fact, that is one of the core insights in this book you can concentrate your dieting efforts on the days that you are fasting and don’t need to be dieting all the time.

My suggestion is to purchase a simple bathroom scale with Bluetooth connection to your phone as this facilitates tracking your weight (and body fat). And anything to increase compliance is good.

Mr Zehren has spent his entire working life bringing advanced medical devices to market. I think this gem of a book has the potential to have an even larger impact on the health of many people.
  • Think of all the different types of diets are floating around, all of them telling you what to eat, how much to eat, ...
If you want to lose weight try NOT eating. It's so simple.

I grabbed this book to see if I could find any other ways to do Intermitent Fasting.
My goal was ketosis not weight loss.
BUT by following similar IF routines I have lost 15 pounds in 6 weeks-- a pretty nice side benefit.
I also did kind-of/sort-of ketogenic approach by cutting down carbs and trying to eat good fats.

This book will help you shed the pounds by Not-doing and gives a workable approach that everyone can follow because it
gives a structure to and rationale for the IF process.

    Non Appétit!
